Anderson Steps Up on Saturday, Starts Second in Sonoma

Greg Anderson had two goals entering Saturday’s final day of qualifying for the Fram/Autolite NHRA Nationals in Sonoma, Calif. He not only wanted to better his sixth place standing following his initial attempts on Friday, but also looked to more closely match the performance of the competitors above him in the starting order.

At the end of the two days of time trials at Infineon Raceway, it appeared the defending Pro Stock champion was successful on both counts. In the morning round, he used a 6.551-second, 209.69 mph run to move up the second starting spot, and then closed out his qualifying effort with the quickest and fastest pass of the final session at 6.566-seconds, 210.31 mph, with teammates Ronnie Humphrey and Jason Line immediately behind, giving the KB Racing powered entries the three best times in the final stanza.

Having put himself in good standing for race day, where he will open against Gordie Rivera, Anderson was cautiously optimistic about his chances for Sunday, where he could establish himself as the all-time leader in Pro Stock wins on the California quarter-mile.

“We definitely made gains with our Summit Racing Pontiacs today, getting them closer to where we need to be,” said Anderson. “We’re not there yet, but we’re gaining on it, and definitely narrowed the gap between ourselves and AJ (No. 1 qualifier Allen Johnson) and some of the other top runners. We ended the day on a pretty positive note for a lot of reasons. Number one, we did improve, and number two we think we can get even better tomorrow, so we’re looking forward to coming out here in the morning.

“We love racing at Infineon Raceway, and although we somehow got off on the wrong foot this weekend, it’s starting to come back to us, and we’re realizing where we went wrong. I think we can run really well tomorrow, and have two great cars with a great shot of finding our way to the final with both Summit Racing Pontiacs. We’re a lot happier tonight than last night and can really feel that confidence building. All in all, it was a very good day.”
