Antron Brown Swings Into Sonoma For Fram/Autolite NHRA Nationals
Antron Brown will drive the Matco Tools Top Fuel dragster into Northern California this weekend looking to repeat his past successes here in the 24th-annual FRAM/Autolite NHRA Nationals at Infineon Raceway.
Whether it was on a Pro Stock Motorcycle or in a dragster, the 35-year-old New Jersey native has found this leg of the infamous Western Swing to his liking.
“I actually like going west for these races,” said the Don Schumacher Racing driver about the three-consecutive weeks of racing in Denver, Sonoma and Seattle. “We swept the swing in 2009 and made it the final round many other times, both on the bike and in the hot rod.”
In addition to his 2009 visit to the Infineon winner’s circle, Brown was twice the runner up here in 2004 and 2006 while riding the U.S. Army PSM for Don Schumacher Racing. He also holds the track’s Top Fuel elapsed-time record, recording a 1,000-foot lap of 3.805 seconds in 2008.
“I may be a long way from where I grew up and learned how to drive,” said the DSR dragster pilot. “But I obviously feel really comfortable here. It’s a nice, relaxing atmosphere and one of the great tracks on tour.”
With four races left before the points are reset for the Countdown to 1 championship playoffs, Brown looks to improve on his fourth place in the 2011 NHRA Full Throttle Top Fuel standings, beginning in Sonoma. Following last week’s semifinal appearance in Denver (a loss to eventual-race-winner and DSR teammate Spencer Massey), he is less than a race-round win behind Larry Dixon (third) and two race-round wins ahead of DSR teammate Tony Schumacher.
“We’ve been running well,” he said. “Brian and Mark (Corradi and Oswald, co crew chiefs) and the whole Matco Tools team keeps giving me a good, competitive car, one which we know can win (with two victories in 2011); we just have to do it again.”
