Shirley Muldowney to be inducted into International Drag Racing Hall of Fame
Ypsilanti, Mich., (March 14, 2006) - Drag racing icon and three-time NHRA Top Fuel World Champion Shirley Muldowney, "the First Lady of Racing", will be inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame in Ocala, Fla., Thursday, March 16, during an induction ceremony and banquet at the Paramount Resort in Gainesville, Fla.
Muldowney's accomplishments as a drag racing pioneer are lengthy. Some of her achievements include being the first woman to be licensed to drive a Top Fuel dragster, the first motorsports personality to be honored by the U.S. Congress with an Outstanding Achievement Award, the first woman to win a professional NHRA national event, the first driver, male or female, to win two and then subsequently three NHRA World Championships, and many more accolades. She has appeared as a guest on "The Tonight Show", and the film based on her life, "Heart Like A Wheel", was a Hollywood hit.
Muldowney retired from driving at the end of the 2003 season. In her current role as Kalitta Motorsports' StriVectin-SD Top Fuel dragster team sponsor relations representative, Muldowney is still very active at drag strips across the United States as the team's quarter-mile ambassador with driver Dave Grubnic. Her popularity is as high as ever as drag racing fans still line-up to get her autograph.
"It's always an honor to be recognized for what we did on the race track," Muldowney said. "It's something we will always take pride in because we know we always gave our absolute best out there."
Muldowney's husband Rahn Tobler serves as crew chief on Kalitta Motorsports' Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster driven by Doug Kalitta in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
