Bristol brings out the best in GEICO racer Lucas
Morgan Lucas, driver of the GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster, expects there to be plenty of excitement on and off the track at this weekend's Thunder Valley NHRA Nationals, and he knows there's nothing quite like a trip to Bristol Dragway to kick off the summer.
"Bristol is going to be a lot of fun," Lucas said. "Mom and dad (Lucas Oil co-founders Charlotte and Forrest Lucas) are going to be down there. We're going to golf with our sponsors from Speedco before the race starts, which is a great way to kick off the weekend."
Once he arrives at the track, Lucas says he always gets inspired to race just by walking around the facility.
"Bristol is one of the most picturesque tracks in the series," he said. "There's not a bad seat or bad vantage point at the whole facility. It's a place where you want to race."
The biggest challenge at the track, according to Lucas, is getting a handle on the changing weather conditions in the rolling hills of eastern Tennessee.
"It can get really slick during the day when it's hot," Lucas said. "Then during the night session it can get cool and fast.
"No matter what it's one of those events we really look forward to."
Lucas and his GEICO crew have an added hop in their step heading into Thunder Valley because they are eighth in the NHRA Full Throttle standings and broke a lengthy first-round losing streak at the last national event.
"We've got to make the car fly and haul the mail," Lucas said. "If we keep improving and keeping the car go down the track, we'll figure out to get the car to consistently run in the 3.80-second range and compete with anybody out there."
