Improving is in the forecast for Coughlin's.

The torrential rain put a stop to the action down the quarter mile at Memphis Motorsports Park. The first of the four scheduled qualifying sessions for the O'Reilly Mid-South NHRA Nationals was canceled and the professional teams took to the track at 6:30 PM (CT) for their first real shot at the track.

Troy Coughlin posted a run of 6.939 at 197.88 mph. He landed just outside of the quick sixteen and will have two additional opportunities to improve tomorrow.

"The conditions were very tricky and we made sure that we did not get too aggressive right out of the trailer. We are looking forward to improving tomorrow and moving into the top half of the field," said Troy.

Jeg Coughlin Jr. blasted through the finish line beams with a 6.892 at 199.64 mph. The run was good enough to put him in the No. 6 slot.

"We knew that we had to make a solid run. On the other hand, we did not want to get too aggressive given the fact that we already had one qualifying session canceled and don't know what is in store for tomorrow," explained Jeg.

"The NHRA Safety Safari did a great job giving us a safe track to race on. I would have bet against us running today. It just shows what a great group the NHRA Safety Safari is, they are the unsung hero's of our sport."

There are two scheduled qualifying sessions on Saturday for the factory hot rods. The sessions will be held at 11:30 AM and 3:30 PM.
