MEMPHIS (Sept. 18) - As part of the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the passing of Rock and Roll's greatest performer, the Miller Lite/Don Prudhomme Racing team will again showcase the Elvis Presley/Miller Lite Top Fuel Top Fuel dragster in the legendary singer's hometown during the running of the 15th annual O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals on Sept. 20-22 at Memphis Motorsports Park.
The cross promotion with Action Performance, Inc. and Elvis Presley Enterprises involves limited edition collectible items and apparel for fans of the 'King of Rock and Roll' and the Larry Dixon Miller Lite team. As a fan, Dixon is delighted about carrying the special one-of-a-kind colors in the shadows of Graceland.
"Elvis pioneered Rock and Roll to the position it is today," said Dixon, who won in Las Vegas earlier in the season in the uniquely painted car. "We ran the car in Las Vegas and I thought it was an honor then and still feel the same way."
With only five races remaining on the schedule, Dixon wants to grab every victory in his path. The winner of seven NHRA National events in 2002 has the current Top Fuel points lead but however is taking every race in stride. He was the runner up last year in Memphis and was on his way to post his first win in 2000 when he underwent a tremendous accident approaching the finish line.
"It's one of the few tracks we haven't yet won," said Dixon. "The past two years I thought we had the car to beat going into the final round. For one reason or another it just hasn't happened, yet. But if we keep knocking on the door, sooner or later we'll be able to get to the winner's circle."
Dixon, who leads the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel category by 65 points, enters the Memphis race with strong confidence. Since the addition of crew chief, Dick LaHaie, Dixon has amassed a quite impressive record of 22 final round appearances, 12 wins, and 12 low E.T. qualifiers.
"The results speak for themselves," said Dixon. "Just look at the amount of final rounds that we've gone to and the amount of wins we've had since he's been tuning the car. He's won championships (94-95) pretty much wherever he's gone. I think his past results kind of speak for themselves."
The 19th race of the 23-race NHRA POWERade series starts on Friday with qualifying sessions at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. CDT. Saturday continues with a second of qualifying with sessions beginning at 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. with the start of the O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals on Sunday, Sept. 22 with an 11:00 a.m. green light.
