Weather dampens Harper's chance for finals.
MILLINGTON, Tenn. (September 24, 2002) - Billy Harper and his team dotted every "i" and crossed every "t" in preparation for this past weekend's National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) O'Reilly Midsouth Nationals. Unfortunately, there are a few things in life you can't control, one being the weather. On Friday, as the best drag racing teams descended upon Memphis Motorsports Park in Millington, Tennessee, the rain began to roll in.
In total, the Memphis area received more than seven inches of rain over the course of the weekend. The downpour forced the cancellation of one of the rounds of Pro Modified qualifying, reducing Harper's opportunities to qualify for the event.
Harper and his 2000 Dodge Viper Pro Mod made two strong passes, but unfortunately came up a bit short. The last qualifying car made a pass down the quarter-mile dragstrip in 6.379 seconds, while Harper's best clocked in at 6.462 seconds.
Despite not making it to the final round of eliminations, the team found its silver lining in the stormy clouds. Over the course of the weekend, the Billy Harper Motorsports team experimented with several set-ups. The three qualifying runs the team participated in gave them a better understanding of the handling of the 2000 Dodge Viper Pro Modified.
"The team was able to try several different set-ups on the car and we will benefit from that knowledge in the future," explained Harper. "We had a good run in the third round with a 6.462-second run. Unfortunately, we were just one hundreths of a second off the bump time."
The team will make two more appearances in the 2002 season. First up is the Texas Motorplex, located in Ennis, Texas. The team will travel to the Lone Star state with competition slated to begin October 11. The following weekend the team will close out their season at Rockingham Dragway, located in Rockingham, North Carolina. The team will hardly rest of the winter.
Plans are underway for the Billy Harper Motorsports team to run a full schedule next year with both IHRA and NHRA events on the schedule.
