ANTRON BROWN REACHES CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH MIKE ASHLEY RACING
BROWNSBURG, Ind. (Jan. 27, 2009) - Following Mike Ashley Racing's recent acquisition of the Matco Tools Top Fuel team, driver Antron Brown has received a contract extension through the 2010 NHRA season, team owner Mike Ashley announced today.
"Antron (Brown) is the face of our organization at Mike Ashley Racing," Ashley said. "He's the centerpiece of our racing program and one of the most marketable drivers in NHRA drag racing. Antron is embraced by the Matco Tools distributors and we couldn't have a better spokesperson for our race team. He will continue to do an excellent job both on and off the race track for Matco Tools and Mike Ashley Racing."
Brown is an 18-time NHRA winner with 14 career No. 1 qualifiers. Last season, Brown transitioned from the Pro Stock Motorcycle catergory to Top Fuel, the premier division in NHRA drag racing. The former college track star made a seamless transition to the 300-mph Top Fuel dragster earning the pole at the season-opening Winternationals. He won in just his fourth Top Fuel start becoming the first driver in NHRA history to earn wins in both Top Fuel and PSM. The New Jersey native went on to win two races in five final round appearances, along with collecting three poles, en route to a top five finish in the 2008 NHRA standings.
"I'm very happy and gratified that Matco has extended its commitment to NHRA drag racing and that we'll be out here racing the next two years," Brown said. "It feels so good to be a part of the Matco Tools family. I love the way that Matco Tools and the 1,500 distributors believe in me to drive the Matco Tools dragster and I can't thank them enough for the opportunity. It's going to be an awesome year and we're going to show everyone that Matco Tools really is the No. 1 tool franchise."
Brown and the Mike Ashley Racing/Matco Tools Top Fuel team begin the 2008 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series, Feb. 5-8, at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona (Calif.) with the 49th annual Winternationals. It is the first of 24 races on the 2009 NHRA schedule. Last weekend, Brown clocked the quickest elapsed time of preseason testing during the National Time Trials at 3.781-seconds. It was the second quickest 1,000-foot pass ever recorded (3.771-seconds - Tony Schumacher).
