Brabhams win - Morris and Baird excluded

Australia's Paul Morris and BMW Motorsport team-mate Craig Baird of New Zealand have been stripped of their victory in today's AMP Bathurst 1000 Super Touring motor race and fined US$40,000.

The pair were excluded from the results of the 35th annual race after Stewards found Baird guilty of exceeding the allowable continuous driving limit of 3 hrs and 30 mins. Race director Ivan Stibbard, who announced the decision, said Baird had driven 3hrs 59 mins over 94 successive laps. Morris drove the opening 67 laps, and Baird completed the event in 6hrs 41 mins 25.40 secs. On lap 142 Baird made the team's final pit stop and it was expected there would be a driver change with Morris. However Baird remained in the car for the remaining 19 laps and that was when he exceeded the 3 hr 30 mins mark.

The exclusion elevated another BMW Motorsports team comprising Australians Geoff and David Brabham to first place. The Brabham brothers had finished second 3.93 secs behind Morris and Baird. Australia's Brad Jones and German Frank Biela, who were third to finish, were promoted to second, ahead of ORIX Audi A4 team-mates Cameron McConville and Belgium's Jean-Francois Hemroulle. Australia's Peter Brock, chasing a 10th win, finished sixth in the works Vectra he drove with England's Derek Warwick.

The expected domination of the Williams-Renault and Peugeot works teams from Great Britain did not eventuate. Alain Menu and Jason Plato led a Williams-Renault until retiring with differential problems on lap 114. Australia's Alan Jones crashed the other Williams-Renault on lap 38. Peugeot's teams of Tim Harvey and Paul Radisich and Neil Crompton and Patrick Watts were forced out by mechanical problems.

Driver quotes:

Paul Morris (BMW Motorsports): (Speaking before his exclusion), "It came down to Audi and us at the end. We had to make an extra pit stop than we'd planned and I thought we'd get third. Craig (Baird) did a good job in the run to the flag."

Geoff Brabham (BMW Motorsport): (Speaking before being elevated to first), "Super Touring races are always close and, regardless of who won, it was an unbelievable effort to get both our cars to the finish. We've proved the best Australian teams rate on the international scene."

Peter Brock (888 Racing Vectra): "We spent too much time in the pits too win. The first pit stop was a disaster losing a lap because there were people in the way and I couldn't park the car where it needed to be."

Frank Biela (ORIX Audi Sport A4): "We didn't have the speed of some others, so our strategy was to run all day. Our pit stops were fast. We did a good job to get into a position where we had a chance of winning."
