TONY PEDREGON IN TIGHT COUNTDOWN TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP BATTLE

INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 17, 2007) -- Tony Pedregon and his Q Horsepower NHRA Nitro Funny Car team continued the battle for a top-four spot in the NHRA POWERade Countdown to the Championship at the 20th annual O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park.Despite a loss in the first round in Sunday's final eliminations, he leaves Memphis fifth in the Countdown with only two races remaining before the Funny Car field is narrowed to the top four teams. He is seven points from the pivotal No. 4 position.

"It's always disappointing to go out in the first round," said Pedregon. "We know what it takes to win out here and our Q Horsepower oil gives us all the protection we need. We gave it our best shot, but came up short."

In Sunday's first round of eliminations, Pedregon faced Ron Capps. In a close, side-by-side drag race, Pedregon got the jump off the line, but was second to the strip with a 4.974 to Capps' winning 4.895.Capps, behind Pedregon in points entering this round, moved into third while Pedregon dropped to fifth.

"Our goal at every race is to qualify and we didn't hit our stride until the final qualifying session," said Pedregon of his quick, 4.840 qualifying pass. "Dickie [Venables, crew chief] read the conditions well and put a good tune-up on it. We're going right back to work and we'll be ready for Dallas. Qualifying in the top-half of the ladder and winning rounds is the key to staying in contention for the Championship. That is what we'll have to do in Dallas next weekend."
