Palmer has own dream weekend in Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn., (August 23, 2006)- Top Fuel pilot Scott Palmer had his own dream weekend at the O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals. During Friday's lone qualifying session, due to a huge rain delay, Palmer had his Grand Crowne Resorts Top Fueler sitting on top for most of the session after posting a 4.642 second blast at 308.92 mph until "Hot Rod" Fuller came and took away the provisional pole position.
Just prior to the events start, Palmer, who had been struggling recently, needed a way to help improve the cars performance. Palmer walked over to the David Powers camp and asked his old friend, Rob Flynn for some guidance. Soon Flynn, after some discussion with team owner David Powers and crew chief Lee Beard, went to visit Palmer and offer a little help with one of Flynn's successful combination's. "We needed to try something different," explained Palmer. "Rob Flynn had helped me in the past and came through again. I can't tell you how indebted I am to David Powers. I can't thank him enough. It's hard to get a good team, in the middle of a points battle, to come over and help a guy who's been struggling."
Palmer qualified in the No. 5 position, the first time in his career that he has started a race in the top half of the field. Palmer drew David Grubnic as his first round opponent, defeating him with a 5.044 at 251.25 mph to Grubnic's 5.658 at 250.23 mph. That's when the rains came, postponing the remainder of elimination's until Monday morning. Palmer would then face off with Grubnic's teammate, Hillary Will in the second round. Unfortunately, Palmer's weekend would end there as Will marched on with a 4.675 second run at 313.58 mph to Palmer's up in smoke, 5.761 at 167.47 mph.
Palmer reflected back on one of his best weekend's in a very long time, "We are so happy to have had such a successful weekend both on and off the track. We ran well with help from our friends at David Power's camp and we were able to make two fans very happy by bring them the Las Vegas race as our crew members. It was truly a dream weekend."
Palmer gave away a trip for two fans to be crew members for the upcoming AC Delco Las Vegas Nationals at the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, October 26-29.
