CAPPS DRIVES NAPA DODGE INTO NO. 10 IN MEMPHIS QUALIFYING
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Sept. 27, 2008) - As the Countdown to 1 playoffs come down to the final four races, No. 9 in points Ron Capps powered the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car into No. 10 in qualifying for the 21st annual NHRA Mid-South Nationals, pairing him up against Robert Hight, fourth in the rankings, in the opening round of Sunday's eliminations.
Capps recorded his quickest pass in the final qualifying session under warm track conditions (112 degrees): a 4.146-second pass at 291.76 mph. That effort moved him from 13th place into 10th. His laps on Friday were a 4.211/286.62 and a tire-smoking 6.547/96.20 in the cooler evening session, relegating him out of the 12-car field in the first day of qualifying. Today, he moved into 12th by virtue of his 4.165/289.51 pass in the third round, then back up into 10th following his final run.
"After last night we were all a little bit discouraged," said Capps, "but I think I'd rather run better on Saturday in the heat, in what would probably be the race conditions for Sunday. And that's what we did.
"The great first run we made today, the 4.16 (third quickest of the round), after not being in the show, was encouraging. And then to go back up there and run the quickest run of the final session up to that point was tremendous.
"For a while, we were lined up with our teammate Jack Beckman for a first-round match-up. It was making Don Schumacher a little nervous. Once Tony Pedregon made his run it kind of shifted us, and then when we went back up there and ran an even better run, it put us with Robert Hight.
"Looking and checking to see who's matched up in the opening round is a product of the Countdown. There are huge match-ups with the Countdown and the non-Countdown cars tomorrow. Just seeing how good a session this last one was, with all the great runs, it's going to be a great race day tomorrow."
