ROMINE BUMPED BY LAST CAR DOWN THE TRACK AT MEMPHIS
MILLINGTON, TN (Oct. 10, 1998) – Paul Romine and the CARQUEST team missed qualifying by one position Saturday at the NHRA Pennzoil Nationals.
In his last qualification attempt, Romine drove his CARQUEST Top Fuel dragster to a 4.85 et, which qualified him 15th at that time. With Doug Kalitta, Connie Kalitta, David Grubnic, and Shelly Anderson in front of him and not qualified, Romine had to wait and see if he would make the Pennzoil Nationals field. Connie Kalitta and David Grubnic both failed to better Romine’s time. Doug Kalitta drove his car to a 4.75 time, bumping Romine to the dreaded 16th position. With one car left to go down the track, the CARQUEST team held their breath to see if Shelly Anderson could better their 4.85 time. Anderson, who has struggled the entire season and had not been down the Memphis quarter-mile under power the entire weekend, put together a 4.79 time, good enough to qualify and bump the CARQUEST team from Sunday’s eliminations.
“We didn’t have our act together the entire weekend,” Romine said. “Yesterday we couldn’t get down the track and today we had to hurt parts just to get to the finish line. It wasn’t pretty, but we’ll regroup and head to Shreveport.”
The CARQUEST team will compete next weekend in their final race of the season, the IHRA World Finals in Shreveport, La. There they will attempt to win their second consecutive IHRA Top Fuel World Championship.
