Better Every Run, But Not Good Enough: The "Cowboy" Misses Memphis Cut
RICHFIELD, OH 8/22/04 It was another bittersweet weekend for Mark "Cowboy" Pawuk after his Summit Racing Pontiac failed to qualify for eliminations at the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. "We ran quicker every run," he said following qualifying, "but we lost some horsepower somewhere, which you can see from our speeds. 'Speeds.' I'm laughing, but not really. We didn't top 200 miles per hour once, and that's all you need to see to know we're down on power.
"We made some major changes in our engine department personnel in the last week, and it's going to take some time for the new group to completely jell.
"Indy is coming in two weeks, and we're determined to be ready. It's going to take a lot of long days and nights to get where we want to be, and that's qualified for eliminations at the most important race of the year, the U.S. Nationals. This year's race is the 50th Anniversary, and we have no intention of watching from the sidelines. We're gonna do whatever it takes to make the show."
Pawuk's Summit Racing Pontiac improved steadily through the four qualifying sessions, but with a best speed of only 199.64 MPH and two runs of under 199, it's clear the car just didn't have enough top end power.
"The car will be back late Sunday night or first thing Monday morning, and we'll have the engine apart shortly after that. I have faith in my guys and together, we're going to get this problem taken care of before Indy. You can count on it."
Testing at Indianapolis Raceway Park, Tuesday and Wednesday, August 24th and 25th.
