MEMPHIS, Sept. 23, 2001 - Doug Herbert began the day from the No. 2 qualifying position - equaling his best showing of the season - but his competitive day ended earlier than he wanted Sunday at the AutoZone Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Herbert's Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster stopped the clocks with a 4.597-second, 313.51-mph run Friday night and was his in the last eight races. He began the day with a win over Luigi Novelli and squared off against Doug Kalitta in the quarterfinals.

The two cars were close for a while, but Kalitta pulled away when Herbert's dragster spun the tires past half-track. That led to an easy win for Kalitta, 4.684 to 5.071.

"I'd say the track got us," Herbert said, noting that no driver won in the right lane - where he was - in the first two rounds. "Dragsters weren't getting down that lane at all. We didn't want to smoke the tires in the first round so we backed it down and ran 4.742 but we lost lane choice against Kalitta."

Herbert continued holding down seventh place in Winston Series standings with 1022 points.

The Snap-on Racing team returns to action Friday through Sunday in the Inaugural NHRA Nationals at Joliet, Ill.
