MEMPHIS, Tenn. (October 9, 1999) - After rain washed out Pro Stock Truck qualifying on Friday, the field for final eliminations was set today after only one additional round of time trials conducted in less than optimum conditions. With the temperature in the 80s, and humidity near 90 percent anyone outside the starting lineup when the day began were unsuccessful in their attempt to break into the field of 16. David Spitzer's Sunnen/Dynagear Sonoma finished the weekend qualified in the No. 18 position with an elapsed time of 7.640 seconds at 175.91 mph set during Thursday's first round of qualifying. In today's only qualifying session, Spitzer's GMC covered the quarter mile in 7.737 seconds at 173. 90 mph. "The conditions were horrible, and we were one of the first trucks out, but it wouldn't have mattered," Spitzer said. "Although the session got faster as we went along, there wasn't enough racetrack. If you weren't already in you didn't get in. I think the best pass that session was a 7.64 and that wasn't as quick as the established bump spot so that tells the story right there. It's disappointing but we'll learn from it and go on. "We're going to take one of our motors back to Indianapolis. We hurt it on Thursday and that's what killed our chances during the first day of qualifying. We pulled it out and ran the other motor today. We'll haul it back, get it back up to snuff and roll on into Dallas. Although we won't have an opportunity to do any testing before the next race, the weekend off will give us a chance to look everything over. I'm looking forward to getting back to the shop, checking everything out on this Dynagear Sonoma and making everything fresh for the last two races. It would be nice to get qualified, win some rounds and maybe win a race." Rick Jones came into today's final round of qualifying sitting in the No. 25 position with an elapsed time of 7.658 seconds at 175.00 mph, and within striking distance of the starting field. But the RJ Race Cars Sonoma driver fell victim to the same circumstances that sidelined his GMC teammate, David Spizter. The No. 1 qualifier was Bob Panella in an S-10 with an elapsed time of 7.549 seconds at 178.80 mph. Randy Daniels qualified second, Mike Coughlin was third, Greg Stanfield was fourth and Brad Jeter was fifth. The bump for the 16th and final starting spot was 7.635 seconds at 175.48 mph. "The racetrack was completely different today than it was on Thursday," explained Jones. "They've done some work to this facility recently and when we ran a couple of days ago it was awesome. But today after it rained, we had to get out there pretty quick and run and the track just wasn't ready. Downtrack a lot of guys were struggling and we spun a little bit as well, but all in all we can't complain. We'd like to be racing later today but we'll keep working towards next year confident that this RJ Race Cars Sonoma will be a more competitive truck. "The weather conditions weren't conducive to running fast today. On Thursday the humidity was around 35 percent. Today the barometer was a little lower and the humidity was near 85 percent, so obviously it was a lot worse. It makes it tough though. This a strong class and you have to be at your best to compete, but we'll get a handle on it and we'll be right there slugging it out with the best of them." The next stop on the NHRA Pro Stock Truck schedule is the 14th annual O'Reilly Fallnationals on October 21 - 24 at Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Tex. It is the 13th race on the 14-event Pro Stock Truck tour. Final-round coverage of the Fallnationals can be seen on ESPN2 on Sunday, October 24, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Eastern. Qualifying highlights can be seen on Saturday, October 23, starting at 9:30 p.m. Eastern.
