MEMPHIS, TN (Oct. 7) - Don Prudhomme's Top Fuel Team saved its best qualifying effort for last at the 13th Annual AutoZone Nationals as Larry Dixon drove the Miller Lite Dragster to an elapsed time of 4.675 seconds at 307.09 mph Saturday to claim the No. 10 spot and a first round meeting Sunday morning with No. 7 seed David Grubnic at Memphis Motorsports Park.
Entering the final day of qualifying in the No. 7 position, Dixon made his third trip down the Memphis quarter mile track in the right lane and posted a time of 4.701 seconds at 305.70 mph. Also of note, the day's opening lap for Dixon marked the third time in as many qualifying passes this weekend that saw the Miller car paired against Top Fuel veteran Kenny Bernstein, with Dixon winning by a .022 second advantage. The 4.701 second lap left Dixon No. 11 after three qualifying laps.
Dixon's fourth and final attempt to climb the ladder would be his best as Crew Chief Dick LaHaie found his best combination of the weekend, resulting in a time of 4.675 seconds at 307.09 mph. The lap came down the left lane and was a single run for Dixon.
While qualifying in the bottom half of the field of 16, Dixon will sacrifice lane choice to Grubnic, however the Miller Lite pilot comes into tomorrow's opening round with a career mark of two wins and just one loss against the Montana Express driver, including a 2-0 slate this season. Dixon has reached the second round at 18 of the 19 events held already this season, including 10 semifinal appearances, five trips to the final round and two wins (Houston, Richmond).
The Indianapolis-based driver's career-best qualifying effort at Memphis was a No. 2 seeding in 1998 where he posted a first round finish to Shelly Anderson. The Miller Lite/Raybestos pilot enters this weekend's race ranked No. 3 in the Winston Top Fuel points race, 200 points behind leader Gary Scelzi. Speedvision will carry the action Sunday with early rounds airing from 2-3:30 PM ET and final rounds coming between 6-7:30 PM ET.
