MILLINGTON, Tenn. -- Defending Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster Champion David Wells qualified No. 2 for the Autozone Nationals presented by Pennzoil at Memphis Motorsports Park just outside of Memphis, Tenn., but lost in round one to Jeff Bohr when he smoked the tires right off the starting line. Bohr pulled away with an elapsed time of 5.712 at 239.61 miles per hour to put away Wells' 6.141 at 226.77 mph.

The LeMars, Iowa, driver is disappointed with the loss, but is still optimistic going into his final races of the season in Dallas and Houston.

Wells said, "We had it set up pretty aggressive. We had it set up for the way the track was earlier, but the track just wasn't there in the first round. The track really went away. The car just went a few feet and smoked the tires. I had to lift, and got back in it in case he broke or something, but that didn't happen. We got beat."

"We should go to Dallas and Houston if everything goes our way. We'll be alright, just pick it up at Dallas."
