Chip Ellis struggles in heat at Memphis
MILLINGTON, Tenn. (August 21, 2005) -- In an early exit, on a day that saw the heat index reach 110-degrees and the track temperature push 130-degrees, Chip Ellis, driver of the G Squared S&S-powered Buell, failed to make it pass the opening round of eliminations at the 18th annual NHRA O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals.
In what appeared to be a repeat of Ellis' run last weekend at Brainerd (Minn.) International Raceway in round two, Shawn Gann left first on Ellis and never looked back. Gann crossed the finish line in 7.336 seconds on a hot, slippery track. Ellis followed with a 8.439 elapsed time down the Memphis Motorsports Park quarter-mile.
Unofficially, Ellis leaves the O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals No. 6 in the NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle point standing. He now has 621 points.
TELEVISION: ESPN2 will air three hours of same-day television coverage of eliminations for the 18th annual NHRA O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals beginning at 10 p.m. this evening (Sun., Aug. 21). The elimination show repeats one week later on ESPN2 early Sunday morning, Aug. 28, from 3 until 5 a.m. Television times are Eastern Time (ET) and subject to change at anytime. Check local listings.
NEXT RACE: Labor Day weekend is the race that every drag racer wants to win -- the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. The "granddaddy" of all NHRA races unfolds at Indianapolis Raceway Park in Clermont, Ind., just outside Indianapolis, the motorsports capital of the world. Action begins Aug. 31 and continues through Sept. 5, with professional qualifying starting on Fri., Sept. 2 and continuing through Sun., Sept. 4. On Sat. Sept. 3, Chip Ellis and G Squared Motorsports will be part of a special race-within-a-race, the Ringer Gloves Pro Bike Battle. Ellis will then go after the Pro Stock Motorcycle title when eliminations get underway on Monday, Labor Day, Sept. 5.
