Mopar0x00ae Pro Stocker and Tennessee Native Allen Johnson Will Attempt to Drive Blues Away at O'Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals
Center Line, Mich. -- It's crunch time for Team Mopar0x00ae driver Allen Johnson as he returns to his home state of Tennessee for the O'Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals. The Greeneville, Tenn. native knows he needs to go rounds at the event to keep his dream of a first-ever NHRA POWERade Pro Stock title alive. The race is scheduled for Sept. 26 -- 28 at Memphis (Tenn.) Motorsports Park.
Mopar/J&J Racing Dodge Stratus R/T driver Johnson is one of only 10 Pro Stock drivers to qualify for the six-race NHRA Countdown to 1 playoffs. Though he had early exits in the first two Countdown events at Charlotte and Dallas, Johnson is confident he can get on track in front of his home crowd.
"We enter this race not in very much worse shape than we entered the last one," said Johnson. "We're only a round our two behind where we were before the previous race at Dallas. So we can get this done, but it's a must do situation. I told the guys when we left Dallas, we've got to go to the finals to have a shot at this thing, and that's on everybody's mind."
The close location of Johnson's Greeneville-based J&J Racing shop to Memphis provides the veteran Team Mopar driver with a few advantages.
"It's close to home and we can get an extra day's work over everybody before our truck heads out," explained Johnson. "We've got our Mopar HEMI0x00ae engine at the shop, working on it, trying to squeeze out a little bit more power. The race being in Tennessee might give us a little more confidence."
Johnson can also take confidence in his strong track record in qualifying this year. He has qualified in the top half of the Pro Stock field in 18 of 20 events thus far. Having lane choice in the first round has been a huge positive.
"When you qualify in the top three or four, it does give you a decent draw, and we have done that most of the time this year," said Johnson. "It helps a lot when you have that, because everything needs to be near perfect from here out for us to have a chance at the championship. And that's our goal."
