Columbus, Ohio (Pre-race) - At the last race in Chicago Mark Whisnant and his Team Nasty / RW Performance racing team experienced a number of electrical problems that effected the performance of their Pro Stock Truck. Consequently, their failure to trace and cure their electrical gremlins resulted in Whisnant not qualifying for the race. This weekend, Whisnant and Team Nasty will arrive in Columbus, Ohio for the 36th Annual Pontiac Excitement Nationals with the electrical problems they experienced in Chicago solved.
"In Chicago we were having electrical problems with the truck," said Whisnant. "We were having cylinders would go dead for no reason. We could not pin point the problem at the racetrack in Chicago. So we brought it home and changed everything electrical on the truck to try to solve the problem
"We changed the ignition, the coil, the crank trigger, the pick-ups, spark plugs and all the wires. We believe that fixed the problem. The motor is back at Kurt's (Kurt Johnson) and on the dyno right now. We are going to try and test here in Atlanta before we leave for Columbus to make sure the problem is gone.
Whisnant and Team Nasty would like to use this weekend's race in Columbus to make up for last years less than stellar showing.
"Last year in Columbus we did terrible. We where totally lost and as a result we did not qualify for the race. Last year was a learning year for this team, and in Columbus last year, we learned what not to do.
"We have a better plan for this year. This year we have a better idea of how to gear the truck. What kind of shock combinations to run and how to leave the starting line better. I looked at my notes from last year. It will make it easier to tune the truck knowing right off the bat what will not work in Columbus.
"It is going to be hot and greasy in there this year. We have had a year to learn how to race in those kinds of conditions. We are going to take what we learned last year, and what we know doesn't work, and make it work for us this year. I know we will do better in Columbus this year. We will qualify and with some luck take this Team Nasty Chevrolet S-10 to the winner's circle."
Qualifying at the 36th Annual Pontiac Excitement Nationals begins on Friday June 16 and continues on Saturday June 17. Eliminations will take place on Sunday June 18, at 11:00AM EST.
