White looks to keep Division 3 lead in Indy
CLERMONT, Ind. - While the Etterman Racing Federal Mogul Funny Car may be one of the fastest cars in the country, the team and it's driver Marc White have not had exactly the year they have wanted. Coming into this weekend's NHRA Division 3 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series event at the famed Indianapolis Raceway Park, they hope to snap their string of semifinal finishes with a win this weekend to maintain their lead in Division 3 points.
White, from Glendale Heights, Ill., has made it only to the semifinals at his past two divisional races. His first divisional race, a Division 2 race in Gainesville, Fla., was used mainly as a 'testing' race, so the semifinal finish wasn't that big a deal to the team. The next divisional for the team was the Division 3 opener at Route 66 Raceway, just outside of Chicago, and White's home track. White took the No. 1 qualifying spot with an elapsed time of 5.688 seconds at 250.69 mph, but lost in the semifinals when his 2001 Firebird launched into severe tireshake. This weekend, White hopes to get things going in the right direction.
"We're going to try to do the same thing we do at every race we go to," said White. "We're going to try to get the car to run as fast as it can, but we obviously need the car to be a little more consistent. That's been our downfall. The car runs fast, but the consistency is not where we want it to be right now."
White also feels the new racing surface at IRP may be another hurdle all the teams will have to contend with. With that in mind, he is concerned that his tireshake problem may be tougher than normal to get rid of.
"Our problem in Joliet was that we just misread the race track," commented White. "Our problem going into Indy is that the track has been resurfaced, so we have no idea what to expect. With it recently being resurfaced, I don't think it will be real good. In fact, the track might be a little green. It will be an interesting race."
"We'll be happy with whatever the race track allows us to do," continued White. "We always like to think we can run 5.70's-5.80's anywhere we go, so we'll have those numbers in our head, but if the race track won't allow those numbers, we just want to run faster than everybody else."
Qualifying will begin at 4 p.m. Friday for the Federal Mogul Funny Cars, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to www.SummitRacing.com's</A> Drag Race Central for round by round updates of the action from Indy.
