MADISON, Ill. (June 25, 2004) - Tommy Johnson Jr. powered his blue Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo to the quickest and fastest run of his career Friday at Gateway International Raceway to claim the No. 2 qualifying position.

The Don Prudhomme Racing driver blasted his Mike Green-tuned Chevy flopper to a performance of 4.765 seconds at 324.90 mph on Friday's second qualifying effort under unseasonably cool summer conditions in the Midwest. On his first attempt of the weekend, the Indianapolis driver cruised to a run of 4.901 at 315.42 to grab the third qualifying position following the first of four scheduled runs.

"The guys lied to me," Johnson said. "They told me it would run 4.82 or 4.81. I'll take those lies. We got a good first run in on Friday that allowed the crew to be a little more free with what they wanted to do on Friday night. We really weren't trying to go that quick because we knew we had another run at night on Saturday. Hopefully it means there's more in the car tomorrow night."

The five-time NHRA winner eyes his first No. 1 qualifying position of the season Saturday when nitro qualifying continues with sessions at 6 and 9 p.m. (CT) at the Illinois facility.
