JOHNSON JR. DRIVES TO NO. 9 SPOT FRIDAY AT GATEWAY

MADISON, Ill. (June 23, 2006) Seven-time NHRA winner Tommy Johnson Jr. drove his Skoal RacingSM Chevy Funny Car to the No. 9 qualifying position Friday at Gateway International Raceway to begin qualifying for the 10th annual O'Reilly Midwest Nationals. The veteran racer posted a time of 4.926 seconds.

Johnson, one of 13 drivers to have earned wins in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories, blistered the hot Gateway quarter mile in 4.926 seconds at 313.51 mph Friday evening under the lights at the St. Louis-area track. TJ's flopper lost traction on its first qualifying attempt of the weekend as he slowed to a 7.128-second elapsed time.

Johnson eyes a spot in the top half of the Funny Car order when qualifying resumes Saturday at 3 and 6 p.m. (CT) at Gateway Int' Raceway.
