Nitro Fish Ford ZX2 spins tires, loses to Taylor Lastor III
MADISON, Ill., June 29, 2003 - Scott Geoffrion knew the first round of Sunday's Sears Craftsman Nationals at Gateway International Raceway would be different than any qualifying run he made Friday or Saturday.
Temperatures reached into the 90s and the racing surface was very unpredictable . . . and slippery, which Geoffrion found out much to his chagrin.
He left the starting line first with a .019 reaction (his season's best) and led Taylor Lastor III until the Hurley Blakeney-owned Nitro Fish Ford ZX2 began spinning the tires.
"The tires broke loose in third and fourth gear and the car started moving around," Geoffrion said. "It was spinning worse than it did at Columbus (Ohio, two weeks ago when Geoffrion lost in the finals). I didn't see him peripherally and I wasn't going to shut off until he passed me."
Lastor, who had a .061 reaction, passed Geoffrion, winning with a 6.912-second, 200.59-mph run to a 7.068 at 180.19.
With 12 of 23 races complete, Geoffrion is seventh with 542 points, but only 31 behind No. 5 Ron Krisher.
While the NHRA POWERade Series takes the next two weekends off before resuming competition at Denver, Geoffrion and the Nitro Fish crew will be testing Tuesday and Wednesday at the track in the Mile-High city.
First round: Taylor Lastor III, 6.912 at 200.59 def. Geoffrion, 7.068 at 180.19.
