Team Marine Cavalier gets out of groove - - negates a perfect light by Nance

MADISON, Ill., June 30, 2002 --With the Team Marine Cavalier of Larry Nance ready to square off against Mark Whisnant, final eliminations of the NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals got underway today at Gateway International Raceway.

With back-to-back qualifying efforts at Columbus and St. Louis for Team Marine, Nance, an ex-NBA All-Star from Akron, Ohio, qualified 13th with an elapsed time (E.T.) of 6.913 seconds. Whisnant, a second generation Pro Stock driver from Stockbridge, Ga., near Atlanta, qualified fourth with a pass of 6.890 seconds. The pair have never met in head-to-head competition in eliminations.

Nance cuts a perfect reaction time - - .400 seconds - - but that goes for naught as he gets out of the groove and had to abort the run. Whisnant, in his first year in Pro Stock, goes straight down Broadway with an E.T. of 6.925 to take the win light.

After a few weeks off, Nance's Catch 22 Team Marine Cavalier resumes racing at the 23rd annual NHRA Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals. The event unfolds July 18-21 at Bandimere Speedway in the Denver suburb of Morrison, Colo. The Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals begins the first of three consecutive weekends of drag racing and starts the second half of the 2002 race schedule on the NHRA POWERade® Drag Racing Series.
