Densham snags highest qualifying spot of the season

MADISON, Ill. (June 25, 2005) -- Gary Densham earned his highest position in qualifying of the year Saturday at Gateway International Raceway. The Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals is considered the halfway point of the season and Densham is anxious to start winning rounds.

Densham drove his Racebricks.com Chevy Monte Carlo to a 4.904-second time at 318.17 mph for the No. 12 position.

"This is where we thought we were after running a season-best pass in Chicago two weeks ago," Densham said. "Then we missed the show in Englishtown last week, so it's great to see us make a few good passes in qualifying this week. Plus, we get to race on Sunday and that's always a great thing. We made three good runs out of four qualifying sessions and that's a good way to approach what will be a very hot Sunday."

Densham gained experience for the team over the past few days as veteran tuner Rob Flynn was added to the Racebricks team prior to the start of the event.

"It's great having another set of eyes looking over the data and the car along with (crew chief) Greg Amaral and myself," Densham said. "We want to play on Sundays and I think we are getting to the point where we can be more competitive.

"There are so many good cars out here. All 16 teams who race on Sunday are tough. We're happy we are qualified and we're happy with the way the car has run this weekend because we've seen improvement both days. How can we be unhappy?"

Densham will face Eric Medlen in the first round. Medlen qualified in the No. 5 spot with a 4.842 at 312.71.

All of the final eliminations action can be seen in high definition on ESPN2 at 9 p.m. (ET).
