HERBERT DRIVES SNAP-ON DRAGSTER INTO THREE-DAY NIGHT RACE
MADISON, Ill. (June 24, 2005) -- Doug Herbert and his new crew chief Wayne Dupuy completed the first of two days of qualifying Friday for the Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals at Gateway International Raceway.
Dupuy -- a veteran tuner with nearly 30 years of drag racing experience -- joined the Snap-on Tools dragster team this week and has already made some changes in hopes of making the Top Fuel entry more consistently quick.
Herbert's dragster turned in a 5.311-second pass at 236.71 mph for the No. 14 spot in qualifying after two rounds. Qualifying continues Saturday at 5 and 8 p.m. before final elimination start at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.
"We have to expect a learning curve and the best thing we have going for us is an entire team of people who are dedicated to making this Snap-on dragster get down the track," Herbert said. "Wayne has changed a lot of things and I think it is going to pay off soon. I really think we can run a similar number tomorrow and we are likely going to see warmer conditions because Top Fuel runs earlier on Saturday."
Herbert said the team is working double-time to make the transition a success.
"All of the guys on the team really like Wayne," Herbert said. "I didn't know what to expect with making a major change so suddenly, but the guys have responded real well and they are excited about what we're doing. They make me more confident going to the line and we've only made two passes as a group so far. I think that's really cool."
All of the action can be seen in high definition on ESPN2 starting with qualifying between 12 -- 1 a.m. (ET) Sunday. NHRA 2Day will air at 11:30 a.m. (ET) Sunday followed by the final elimination show at 9 p.m. (ET).
