Herbert, Hulk Lose in quarterfinals to eventual race winner Kalitta
MADISON, Ill., June 29, 2003 - Doug Herbert and his movie-themed Hulk/Snap-on Top Fuel dragster advanced to the quarterfinals of Sunday's Sears Nationals at Gateway International Raceway near St. Louis.
After qualifying seventh (4.696 seconds at 313.37 mph), Herbert knocked out David Baca in the opening round, but was eliminated by eventual winner Doug Kalitta in the quarterfinals, 4.684 at 311.20 to 4.781 at 305.77.
"We need to pick up a tenth (of a second) in our elapsed times," said Herbert. "That's what we are going to work on in the next two weeks. We need to make engine changes to make more power. We have been missing something somewhere lately. I wish we could've done better with the Hulk car, but it didn't work out."
Herbert's best qualifying time came in Saturday night's final session. All qualifying was held at night while Sunday's eliminations began at 4:30 p.m. in the heat of a hot St. Louis area day.
"We knew track conditions were going to be different today because the track temperature went from 115 degrees to about 135 degrees," Herbert added. "We want to make up some points in the standings but we weren't able to do that, either."
Herbert remained eighth in NHRA POWERade Series standings with 586, but only 57 points behind No. 4 Cory McClenathan.
The next Snap-on Top Fuel outing will be at Denver, July 18-20.
