Advance Auto Parts Funny Car Strong in Final Session

MADISON, ILL. (June 25, 2005) -- Cruz Pedregon and the Advance Auto Parts Nitro Funny Car will start tomorrow's NHRA national event at Gateway International Raceway in fourth position.

Pedregon, who currently sits fifth in NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series points, drove to a 4.834-second elapsed time at 317.79 mph. The Camarillo, Calif., resident talked about his weekend thus far.

"We were pretty conservative on that first run today because we just wanted to get solidly into the show," said Pedregon, who ran a 4.97 during today's third round. "But (crew chief) Wes Cerny told me we were going to step things up tonight -- and we did. I can't thank everyone enough because this team really knows how to compete."

Pedregon will take on Jeff Arend in the first round of eliminations tomorrow evening.

Advance Auto Parts NHRA Notebook:

HOT, HOT, HOT: Even though this weekend's NHRA race is taking place entirely under the lights of Gateway International Raceway, Cruz Pedregon and the Advance Auto Parts Nitro Funny Car have been battling extreme heat conditions.

With track temperatures reaching the mid-130s in the heat of the day, adjustments have been made to accommodate.

"You just have to back these cars way down," Pedregon said. "They want to run out there, but the heat makes getting traction much more difficult. But the good news is that this team has reacted well. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow night."
