Advance Auto Parts Funny Car Completes Solid Weekend

MADISON, ILL. (June 26, 2005) -- Cruz Pedregon and the Advance Auto Parts Nitro Funny Car drove to the quarterfinals during tonight's NHRA National Event at Gateway International Raceway.

Pedregon posted a 5.172-second elapsed time at 299.06 mph in defeating Jeff Arend to move on. In round two, Pedregon laid down a solid .091 of a second elapsed time, only to stop dead in his tracks a half second later. Opponent Gary Densham drove through to victory.

"The top pulley on the supercharger broke," Pedregon said. "A big chunk came out of it and the pulley dropped off simultaneously. I was just a passenger at that point. I wasn't on the throttle for maybe a half second before things went wrong.

"I've been racing for 15 years and have never had that happen," Pedregon continued. "I think the reason it happened is because we tighten these belts much tighter than we used too. It was kind of weak link that time and it gave way."

It was still a good weekend for the Advance Auto Parts entry.

"Overall, I'm really excited about what this team is doing right now," Pedregon said. "We had a top-five qualifying effort for the second-straight race and made it to the second round -- something we needed to do. It's unfortunate to go out in the second round because the guys work so hard. They were spot on this weekend, as usual."
