Callaway aiming for improvement in Memphis.
MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Defending Division 4 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Lee Callaway will be looking to get back to the top of the division during this weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Memphis Motorsports Park. Callaway scored a semifinal finish at the Division 4 opener in Houston, and hopes to net a win to help him in his title defense.
Callaway, from Baytown, Texas, felt the car was not running at it's normal potential in Houston. The team analyzed the car thoroughly, and found a bad ignition coil to be hampering the car's performance.
"In Houston, we just kept thinking we weren't getting after the tune-up enough, like we were behind the track," said Callaway. "After the race, we sort of took a step back, looked at the tune-up we had in the car, and the numbers the car was running, and realized something wasn't right. The car was more hopped up than when we ran the 5.45 in Indy and it would barely run mid .50's. For this weekend, the car has a brand new ignition system on it. We sent the old system off to Dave Leahy to get tested, and he found we had a bad coil. So hopefully we'll get back on track this weekend."
Callaway also plans to be aggressive this weekend.
"Me and my crew chief Stacy McLemore were talking, and we both decided we weren't going to be as conservative as we usually are this weekend," stated Callaway. "We're going to get after it."
Qualifying begins on Friday, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
