Callaway set to start season at home track
BAYTOWN, Texas - NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster racer Lee Callaway gets to start the 2004 season off with home field advantage so to speak during this weekend's Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Houston Raceway Park. Callaway was set to start his run to regain the Division 4 title in Dallas two weeks ago, but rain rescheduled that race to July, making Houston the first event for the team.
Callaway, who lives within earshot of the track in Baytown, hopes to use a continuation of their end of season improvement with some pre event testing as their formula for success this weekend.
"We started to get after the car a lot more at the end of the year," said Callaway. "We're just going to stick with that theme. We finally were able to do that at the end of the year. We've been wanting to get after it for going on two years now, but every time we would, we would have some mechanical or parts problem that would make us back off of it to make sure we weren't too aggressive. We're going to try to go out there on Thursday and make a lap or two to try some things to give us a running start on the weekend."
With highs only forecasted to be in the high 60's, Callaway and team have their sights set on running their first 5.3 second elapsed time this weekend.
"With the weather and the cars that will be there this weekend, it probably will take .30's to be competitive," stated Callaway. "We're going to get after it, so we hope to run our best this weekend."
Qualifying starts on Friday, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
