Final Round for Alcohol Classes Set for Sunday at Lebanon Valley D1 Lucas
Aragona, Franco No. 1 Qualifiers in other Categories
WEST LEBANON, NY. -- Final qualifying is complete at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Presented by Diamond RV being held this weekend at Lebanon Valley Dragway. In Top Alcohol Dragster John Finke was the No. 1 qualifier at the beginning of the day while Frank Manzo led the field in Top Alcohol Funny Car. After two rounds of eliminations both Finke and Manzo made it through to the final which will be held on Sunday.
Top qualifier Finke of Sellkirk, N.Y., was able to battle his way through two rounds of eliminations defeating Rich McPhillips of Phoenixville, Pa., in the Semifinal. Finke ran a time of 5.481 seconds at 264.91 mph, while McPhillips made of pass of 5.856 seconds at 227.04 mph. In the other Semifinal, it was Dave DeAngelis of Middlesex, N.J., that took the win with a time of 5.594 seconds at 252.80 mph over Darvin Martinets from Lake Jackson, Texas. Finke will take on McPhillips in the final Sunday afternoon.
In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Manzo of Morganville, N.J., continued his dominance qualifying first and eliminating two other opponents to make it to Sunday's Final. Manzo took on Mickey Ferro of Stamford, Conn., in the Semifinal, however Ferro could not get off the line and fouled at the start allowing Manzo to breeze into the final with a time of 5.701 seconds at 254.81 mph. In the other Semifinal, Paul Gill of Brockton, Mass., defeated Bob Tasca III of Cranston, R.I., with a pass of 5.733 seconds at 250.92 mph to clinch a spot in the final. Gill will have the daunting task of taking on 10-time Lucas Oil National Champion Manzo in the Final Sunday afternoon.
Comp Eliminator racer Frank Aragona of Old Bridge, N.J., ran a time of 8.429 seconds to clinch the top position over No. 2 qualifier Gerry Russo of Saddle River, N.J. Another racer that outran the field was Joseph Franco III, from N. Babylon, N.Y., who drove a '85 Camaro and qualified just ahead of Angelo Ditocco of Mahopac, N.Y., in Super Stock. In Stock Eliminator Tom Kreeber of Rensselaer, N.Y., also found the top position with a time of 11.351 seconds while Fred Thibeault of Annapolis Colo., ended the day in the second position.
Glen Puluse of Paterson, N.J., found a spot at the top of the field in Top Sportsman with a time of 6.818 seconds at 205.69 mph. Puluse edged out Carmel, N.Y., racer Chris Rini who ran a time of 6.871 seconds at 176.88 mph. In Top Dragster the No. 1 qualifying position went to Charles Benson of Gardiner, N.Y., running a pass of 7.046 seconds at 167.95 mph while Ed Alessi Jr, of Bethpage, N.Y., qualified with a time of 7.123 seconds at 187.57 mph.
