LAS VEGAS (April 8, 2001) - Dean Skuza defeated Tony Pedregon and John Force en route to a semifinal round appearance in Sunday's SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The Brecksville, Ohio resident fell to Tommy Johnson, Jr. in the semifinals. Johnson, Jr. ran a 4.885-second elapsed time at 310.34 mph to Skuza's 5.054/272.12 combination.
"We had something go in the blower," said Skuza, following his semifinal round run." It sounded funny and didn't run the numbers it should have. I thought this was our weekend.
"It was my job to single-handedly dismantle John Force racing this weekend," Skuza continued. "If you want to win a championship, you have to beat the best. And John Force is definitely the best in the business."
Skuza defeated Pedregon for the second-straight race and garnered his sixth career round victory over Force.
Alderman Falls in Round Two
Mopar Parts Dodge R/T driver Darrell Alderman fell to defending Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin, Jr. in the second round of eliminations of today's SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Alderman shook the tires and slid down the course, as Coughlin cruised to the round victory. Coughlin ran a 6.976-second elapsed time at 198.20 mph, bettering Alderman's 7.548/143.41 combination.
"Our clutch was just way to aggressive," said Alderman. "When (chief starter) Rick (Stewart) pulled us back when the light malfunctioned it overheated the clutch. I think the track got us on that one because we a great car this weekend."
Alderman's teammate Mark Osborne deep-staged on his teammate and ran a 7.050-second elapsed time at 197.36 mph.
"You just can't trick an old dog," said a smiling Osborne. "It wasn't that good of run. The car really spun the tires in third and fourth. The good news is that we figured out the problems that we had in Houston.
Osborne failed to make the show two weekends ago.
Morgan Falls in Round One
Larry Morgan, driver of the Dodge Motorsports R/T Pro Stock entry, fell to Jim Yates in the first round of eliminations during today's SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Yates ran a 6.967-second elapsed time at 197.83 mph, outdueling Morgan's slower 7.039-second pass at 196.16 mph. The Newark, Ohio resident had to change engines prior to eliminations.
"We really missed the setup today," Morgan said. "First we blew the tires off it and it also moved around in the lane. We had a handful this weekend. The track was kind of hard to get a hold of."
