LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Mark Whisnant, driver of the PiranaZ Chevrolet S-10 Pro Stock Truck, is gambling that his luck has changed as he arrives at The 2nd Annual SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals in Las Vegas, Nev.
"In Las Vegas we are going to take a gamble and run our new truck," said Whisnant. "Because it this point we have nothing to lose. We have had the worst luck lately. After testing in Houston, I feel like maybe our luck has changed, because it sure cannot get any worse.
" We have had a lot of little stupid things happen to us in the last two races. Things that never happen to anyone else. For example in Houston, we had the shift light malfunction, not once but twice. That never happens to anyone else just us.
"We stayed in Houston after the race and tested our new PiranaZ truck. That is why I think our luck has changed.
"The first time we tested it before Gainesville, it would just flat not run. It was very slow, and we thought we had an electrical problem.
"In Houston when we tested it, the truck ran fine. It even put better numbers up than we thought it would. That was really encouraging to me. I am hoping it is a sign that our bad luck is behind us.
Whisnant talked about racing at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and how he expects to do. "I am optimistic about Las Vegas. We have good data from last year, and that is a good place to start.
"Las Vegas is definitely a hard track to tune for. The high altitude and dry conditions are not like anything we see all season. Trying to find what makes the truck happy is hard, but not impossible.
"Last year, in the last session of qualifying we learned something that caused us to pick up when no one else did. What we found got us into the show. Hopefully what we learned last year will give us an advantage this year, or at the every least, start us in the right direction so we are not giving away any passes.
"This weekend we are going to roll the dice, and see what this new truck has. We are taking a gamble, but what better city to take a chance in than Las Vegas."
Qualifying at the 2nd Annual SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals will take place on Friday April 6 and Saturday April 7. Eliminations get underway at 11:00 AM PST on Sunday April 8.
