WJ grabs third position at Vegas qualifying midpoint.

High winds swirled around The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway during first day of qualifying for the Summitracing.com Nationals. However, this did not prevent Warren Johnson and the GM Performance Parts Racing team from taking advantage of the cooler conditions on Friday evening to post a 6.900-second elapsed time with a top speed of 200.00 mph. This placed the six-time NHRA Pro Stock Champion third heading into Saturday's final two sessions.

"When conditions are at a premium like they were tonight, you can roll the dice or go for number one, but doing that you also run the risk of going over the edge and not qualifying. When I came to the line, the bump was a 6.93, and although the cars I was running with couldn't bump my 6.924 out, they could have pushed me further down in the order. Therefore, we decided to be a little conservative and make sure to put ourselves solidly in the show.

"We have all day tomorrow to work on it, and it's possible the conditions in the morning could be as good as we had tonight. Most importantly, our GM Performance Parts Grand Am is in a good position for Sunday."
