SCHUMACHER ENDS UP FOURTH

LAS VEGAS, Nev., April 4 - U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher grabbed the fourth starting position here Saturday during final qualifying for the SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

After losing both qualifying runs due to weather on Friday, Schumacher used a couple of sub-four second passes to settle into the top half of the field for Sunday's race.

"I'm happy with how we performed today," said the Chicago-area resident. "We got down the track minus any problems. Now, we'll prepare for tomorrow's battle." Schumacher will take on 13th-place qualifier, Terry Haddock, in the opening round of eliminations beginning at 11 a.m. PDT. It will be their first meeting of the season.

"We're going to go out and do our deal," added the six-time world champion. "We'll line up against Terry and give him our best shot."

On Sunday, Schumacher will be attempting to pocket his second victory of the year and the 58th of his career. Additionally, he's looking for his fifth win at The Strip. "Like I've been saying all weekend, we got a solid shot in the arm by winning in Houston last weekend," he said. "Now, we need keep moving forward tomorrow. My U.S. Army team is coming together quite nicely."

Schumacher would like nothing better than to depart Las Vegas holding the point lead. He started the weekend just one round of racing behind the leader, Antron Brown. "We can't look beyond our first round of competition," he said. "Hopefully, we'll be holding another trophy at the end of the day."
