Tony Pedregon Earns Top Qualifier Award in Vegas

Las Vegas, April 3, 2004 -- In only his fourth race as team owner and driver, defending Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon earned his 26th career pole and first of the season,at the NHRA Nationals in Las Vegas. The Quaker State Chevrolet Camaro, tuned by Dickie Venables, ran a track record elapsed time of 4.747 seconds at 321.88 mph.

"This is by far one of the best moments in my career," said Pedregon. "Because we did it on our own, me and Dickie, just a couple of guys who wanted to come out here and give it a try on our own. Maybe there was some doubt if we could do it but we put a great group together and this is a direct result of teamwork.

"What makes this astonishing to me is that we did it in just two sessions. By half-track the car pulled the front end up and I was smiling. The conditions were optimum and we went for it so when it started pulling at half-track I knew it was on a run. The Camaro drives completely differently then what I've been used too, but I feel good in there, especially at this track."

Pedregon won both events at "The Strip" last season and will look to continue that streak tomorrow by winning his 28th career race and first as team owner.

Television coverage of final eliminations can be seen on April 4, from 11:00 p.m. -- 1:00 a.m. on ESPN2.
