Pedregon Advances To Quarterfinals In Vegas
Las Vegas, April 4, 2004 -- Final eliminations were completed today for the NHRA Nationals at "The Strip" in Las Vegas. Defending Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon came into eliminations as the number one qualifier with a track record elapsed time of 4.747 seconds at 321.88 mph.
In the first round Pedregon defeated Jim Head with an elapsed time of 4.850 seconds at 308.64 mph to Heads' slower elapsed time of 5.112 seconds at 294.31 mph.
"It wasn't a pretty run but we got the win light, said Pedregon. "We lost a cylinder and had an increase in oil pressure, but the car still put up a solid 4.8 second run which we were pleased with."
The Quaker State racing team had to change motors before their second round match up with Pedregon's former boss, John Force. They left the starting line together but Force crossed the finish line first with an elapsed time of 4.941 seconds at 252.90 mph to Pedregon's slower elapsed time of 5.335 seconds at 212.83 mph.
"After the motor change, we warmed up the car and noticed a problem, said Pedregon. "So, after we fixed the problem we warmed up the car again. When we went up to the starting line to run, the clutch was still to hot from the warm up, and hadn't had time to cool down and caused the car to smoke the tires. But we recognized the problem and we know now what to do if that was to happen to us again.
"This weekend was still very encouraging and we're thrilled to have been able to earn the low qualifier award," added Pedregon. "We keep making improvements and we feel good about where we are at this point in the season. We're going to stay and test the car tomorrow and start preparing for Houston.
In the final round of eliminations it was Phil Burkart defeating Whit Bazemore with an elapsed time of 5.029 seconds at 264.03 mph to Bazemore's slower elapsed time of 5.452 seconds at 189.50 mph.
The next race for the Quaker State racing team is the NHRA Nationals in Houston, Texas on April 15-18.
