TEAM HAMMONDS OUT IN FIRST ROUND OF ELIMINATIONS
(LAS VEGAS, Apr. 5, 2009) - - Team Hammonds was knocked out today in the first round of eliminations at the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals.
In seventh place, the team faced Larry Morgan and chose the left lane for action. Staging went well, but out from the line, driver and owner of the No. 20 Race for Achievement Chevy Cobalt Tom Hammonds shook the tires and had to abort the run.
"I really don't know what happened," said disappointed Crew Chief Tomi Laine. "The air and track was much better than yesterday and I felt the car was a little soft on the car tune-up. I made the car a little bit more aggressive, actually softer at the starting line. The car just tried to hook-up off the line and suddenly went out of control."
Laine continues, "I was trying to find a reason as to what really happened. Probably, the problem was just me trying to be too aggressive, and that was just a fine line that we just did not get down the track. I feel really, really bad for the rest of the team because everybody worked so hard, ran good, but then wasted a round."
Hammonds did not feel the round was wasted and also felt Laine and the team did an excellent job. "We are always disappointed not to be able to go rounds, but as long as we can learn from what we are doing it will make us a better team. It was a good weekend. We qualified well and are going in the right direction. The team is doing an excellent job, and the car is coming along. We are going to take it back to the shop, work on it a little bit, and maybe do some testing before the Atlanta event to do even better there."
The team is planning to go to Charlotte to test. They will not be concentrating on running good elapsed times, but making sure the carburetors and timing are working well for the Atlanta event. Again, Laine says the key is staying with the overall season goal of qualifying at each event. He wants to add to the goal by winning the first round of eliminations and hopes Atlanta will be the time. For now, they will accept their finish for the Las Vegas race and learn from the data.
