WILK WILL "FORCE THE ISSUE" FROM THE 10th SPOT

Tim Wilkerson went 1-for-2 on Saturday in Las Vegas, posting a very fine 4.169 on his first pass, which moved him up into the No. 5 position, but then spinning the tires in Q4, which caused him to slide back down into the No. 10 spot. From that position, he'll race John Force in round one.

"We made just about exactly the lap we were after on the first one, except for the part where it put a cylinder out about two seconds into the run," Wilkerson said. "It was going for low of the session until it dropped the hole, but that gave us a lot to work from and we were where we wanted to be. The last lap became kind of a 'hero session' for a lot of teams, who jumped way up in this good late-afternoon air. We felt like we had the leeway to step on it a little, but I still didn't expect it to spin the tires, especially that far out. By the time you've cleared the 330 mark, you figure you're going to make it.

"We had a hard time getting the car started, which put us way behind in terms of our normal routines, and I had to do a shorter than normal burnout so that we wouldn't leave Force and his guys sitting there. I don't know if that had any big effect on how the clutch or the car worked, but it smoked the tires out there and now we run John in the first round. Guess we'll just have to force the issue and give him a good fight. I'm sure both teams will be ready."
