SECOND ANNUAL SUMMIT RACING.COM NATIONALS
APRIL 5-8, 2001 - - PROFESSIONAL QUALIFYING/ELIMINATIONS: APRIL 6-8
THE STRIP AT LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY - - LAS VEGAS, NEVADA
Day 1 of Qualifying: Panella #1 with new track ET record
Qualifying Session 1: 7.623 seconds @ 178.24 mph (#2) Qualifying Session 2: 7.597 seconds @ 178.59 mph (#1)
Las Vegas - - Bob Panella, Jr., from Stockton, Calif., the two-time and reigning NHRA Winston Pro Stock Truck champion, qualified number one as the first day of qualifying for the Summit Racing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway came to an end. The twenty-nine-year-old driver also reset the track record for elapsed time (ET) when he recorded a pass of 7.597 seconds at 178. 59 mph.
“We’ve got a little bit different horsepower combination than we had here last year but we still started with the data we gained here last year. We ran exceptionally well last year. We started pretty good (in the first session) and then improved on that tonight. Hopefully things will pan out like they did last year. Stay on top and be on top on Sunday,” said Panella.
“You’ve got to deal with a small bump about half track. It’s a lot like Bristol. It’s good for the spectators to have a tunnel under the track but it’s not the greatest thing in the world for the race cars. We shift right around half track and that’s where the tunnel’s at. You’ve got to deal with that. It isn’t terrible, but you’ve got to deal with it. It seems to be a little better over there in the left lane than it was in the right lane. Hopefully if we can keep lane choice throughout Sunday, we won’t have to worry about the bump in the right.
“Now (for tomorrow) my goal’s going to be to get our team GMC Sonoma a little bit higher (in the field). He (Jeff Gracia) kind of made a bad run tonight. Hopefully, we can apply some of the stuff we did to my truck tonight to his and put them both on top,” concluded Panella.
Qualifying continues tomorrow, with two sessions scheduled.
Gracia is fourth as first day of qualifying comes to a close
Qualifying Session 1: 7.635 seconds @ 178.02 mph (#4)
Qualifying Session 2: 7.648 seconds @ 177.42 mph
Las Vegas - - Jeff Gracia, from Ontario, Calif. in the second Panella Motorsports truck, didn’t have the pass he expected in the second of two Friday qualifying sessions.
“We tried something different on my truck for that last run hoping that it would work out for both trucks. It didn’t. We also were probably a little soft in the clutch. Bobby (Panella) went the right direction, that’s why he’s number one. Tomorrow we’ll try and be more like Bobby’s truck,” said Gracia.
The best pass for Gracia’s GMC Sonoma was in the first session when he covered the quarter mile in 7.635 seconds at 178.02 mph.
Gracia, along with all other professional drivers, will have two more chances on Saturday to move up the qualifying ladder.
