Team Koretsky: To Vegas with helmets on

LAS VEGAS - - Kenny Koretsky, owner of Team Koretsky and driver of one of the team's two Pontiac Grand Ams, says that they are ready to race at the NHRA Nationals which is being contested this weekend at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

"I'm the most optimistic I've been, about our chances this weekend, since the season opened the first of February," said Koretsky. "'Why?' you ask. Well, I'll tell you.

"We tested this week at Atlanta Dragway as part of our ongoing program to position this team to qualify and go rounds at any given national event on the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series. The results of that test session indicate that the problems that prevented us from qualifying at the first three races should be a thing of the past."

Team manager Eddie Guarnaccia, Jr., also feels that the future is bright for Team Koretsky. "Finally, we have something that I think we can feel confident about when we go to the races. That being, if we do our job right we can qualify and play on Sunday. We have all the right parts and pieces to make Kenny (Koretsky) and Richie (Stevens) a factor in Pro Stock," he said.

With Richie "the Kid" Stevens, Koretsky's teammate, handling the driving duties for both Team Koretsky Grand Ams during the two-day test session, Stevens came away with numbers that would qualify at any national event and were usually better than the other Pro Stock competitors testing there. Guarnaccia remains cautiously optimistic about the results.

"I think we had a real good test session in Atlanta," said Guarnaccia. "On Wednesday we ran what we call the 'blue car,' the one Kenny drives. With our number three engine, it went 6.92 (seconds) at 199 (mph). We just want to make sure everything was okay with the setup. We then switched to the 'white car,' normally piloted by Stevens, put in our number one engine and ran the low elapsed time of the day.

"We came back on Thursday and put the number one motor in the 'blue car' and waited to run until after everybody there had two good hits under their belts. We then went out and ran low numbers of the day, down in the 83 range (6.830 seconds).

"I don't want to mislead anyone, especially ourselves, about these times because you never know what someone else is trying to accomplish during testing. But the main thing is that whatever problems we had in the past now seem to be behind us. If we do our job right and hit the right tune up for Vegas, I think you'll see these Valspar Refinish/Snap-On Tools/Cyclo Industries Pontiac Grand Ams playing during eliminations," concluded Guarnaccia.

Koretsky says, "Both Richie and I are coming to Vegas with our helmets on. We're excited. Hopefully, when the weekend's over we can make our sponsors Valspar Refinish, Snap-On Tools and Cyclo Industries as excited as we are."
