Friday Qualifying Summary
Team Jeg's looking strong in Las Vegas.
Team Jeg's quest for a third consecutive victory at the Summitracing.com NHRA Nationals began with two qualifying sessions at "The Strip" at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Friday. Team Jeg's drivers Jeg and Troy Coughlin entered the weekend optimistic about their chances of a "three-peat" in the desert.
Troy was the first of the Coughlin brother Pro Stock duo to roll the yellow and black into the water-box. Troy started the weekend off in fine fashion with a solid first attempt. Troy's Jeg's Mail Order Chevrolet ripped down the quarter-mile in 7.016 seconds at 196.82 mph placing Troy deep into the field of sixteen after one round of qualifying action.
"It was definitely the pass that we were looking for out of the gate," said Troy. "The car felt flawless from start to finish and it gave us a great baseline to work with for the weekend."
Jeg Coughlin followed shortly after brother Troy in the weekend's first session. The Jeg's Mail Order machine ran a slower yet solid 7.04 second pass at 196.47 mph. The pass was good enough for the fifteenth qualifying spot after round one.
"We were a little conservative on our first run," commented Jeg. "We could have been more aggressive, but it was still good to get a solid pass down the track"
Friday qualifying ended with an evening session that is always a fan favorite. Team Jeg's looked to take advantage of cooler conditions as they tuned their 500 cubic inch Chevrolet big-blocks for what could shape up to be the best qualifying session of the weekend.
Jeg Coughlin led Team Jeg's into second round qualifying running in the preferred left lane. Jeg improved in his second attempt with a pass of 6.98 seconds at 197.48 mph.
"The night session was an important run for us," said Jeg. "We needed to step up to the plate and our guys were up to the challenge. We'll take the data from our run tonight and use it to fine tune our set up for the heat of the day tomorrow."
Troy followed up with another strong performance with a pass of 6.98 seconds at 197.05 mph.
"It felt great to make two strong runs in a row," said Troy. "The entire team has been working so hard and it looks like we may be starting to reap some of the rewards for our efforts. Jeg had a good run that session as well. It's great to have both cars performing the way we knew they could."
Jeg and Troy Coughlin are qualified ninth and eighth respectively after two qualifying sessions from "The Strip" at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Action will resume in Las Vegas on Saturday as Jeg and Troy steer their Jeg's Mail Order Cavalier's into the weekend's final two qualifying sessions.
