Too big a mountain for Rookie Matt Rhoades
Qualified #16 @ 7.660 seconds and 176.51 mph
Round 1: Rhoades: 7.635 seconds at 176.56 mph lost to
Greg Stanfield: 7.545 seconds at 178.83 mph
Las Vegas - - Matt Rhoades, from nearby Lake Havasu City, Ariz., had a big mountain to overcome in the opening round of eliminations at the NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals. Number 16 qualifier Rhoades was paired against number one qualifier Greg Stanfield, from Bossier City, La. But the mountain was too big for Rhoades.
In a Jerry Haas prepared Chevy S-10, Rhoades ran his quickest elapsed time (ET) of the weekend, a 7.635 second pass. Stanfield went Rhoades one better. He had the quickest ET of the first round - - a 7.545 - - in defeating Rhoades.
A professional rookie, Rhoades qualified for his first professional Pro Stock Truck race this weekend. “I can’t get over the excitement of running in my first professional event. I’m from a town several hours from Las Vegas and I consider The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway my home track. It was great running here where all my family and friends could watch. I hope this is only the first of many more,” said Rhoades.
“In that opening round, I got out first on Stanfield but he has some awesome power. He came around my Chevy S-10 and won the race. I don’t know if this makes me feel any better about losing but I understand he had the quickest time in the first round. My co-crew chiefs Jimmy Gunther and Bob Shawcross gave me a good car to go up against Stanfield. I definitely had an opportunity to win,” added Rhoades, on the opening round match up.
The next event on the NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series for Team Haas is the Advance Auto Parts Nationals at Atlanta Dragway. The event unfolds May 3-6.
