Greco hopes for better Saturday
Qualifying Session 1: 7.709 seconds @ 175.89 mph (#17)
Qualifying Session 2: 7.783 seconds @ 174.53 mph (#22)
Las Vegas - - Charlie Greco, from St. Davids, Penn., wants to put today behind his team and direct all their energies on qualifying on Saturday. After qualifying ended on Friday for the NHRA Summit Racing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Greco was on the outside of the top 16 qualified in 22nd position.
"Nothing went the way we wanted today," said Greco. "I know it was Friday, but it seemed like Friday, the 13th. We made too many mistakes today. We were off a little bit on the set up. We should have run faster than we did. The driver also made his share of mistakes, too.
"We're really going to try tomorrow. We've got to look at the computer, look at what we're doing. It's the first time we've ever run this type of altitude. We'll adjust our combination and the driver will work on his driving skills. We have two more opportunities and we're going to make the best of them. Here's to a better Saturday."
Matt Rhoades in elite 16 at #10
Qualifying Session 1: 7.828 seconds @ 169.38 mph (#23)
Qualifying Session 2: 7.665 seconds @ 176.93 mph (#10)
Las Vegas - - With Friday's qualifying for the NHRA Summit Racing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the history book, rookie driver Matt Rhoades, from nearby Lake Havasu City, Ariz., finished the day as a member of the elite 16. He guided his Jerry Haas-prepared Chevy S-10 down the quarter-mile in 7.665 seconds at 176.93 mph in yesterday's second session.
"After getting out of the groove in the opening session, we are pleased with the rebound we made in the final session. Being the second pair out in the first session, the track was still green. Plus, there is a slight bump near half track. The combination of the two forced this Chevy S-10 out of the groove and I felt it was better to abort than mess up the fiberglass," said Rhoades, who thinks of The Strip as his home track.
"We came around in that second pass. We've been searching for the right combination. I think we've hit on the right one for this track. It hooked and went straight. We'll make some adjustments for Saturday and hopefully go out and do it again."
Rhoades will have two opportunities to improve tomorrow, with two sessions scheduled - - one at 11 a.m. and the final session at 2 p.m.
