Capps Qualifies No. 3 at Las Vegas; Records Career-Best Speed
LAS VEGAS (April 3, 2004) -- Ron Capps recorded his best qualifying effort since last June when he powered his John Stewart-tuned Skoal RacingSM Chevy Monte Carlo Funny Car to the No. 3 spot Saturday after posting a run of 4.779 seconds at 324.75 mph, a career-best speed, at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
After recording an effort of 5.852 at 234.94 on his first attempt of the weekend, the 14-time NHRA winner blasted his Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy flopper to his best effort of the young 2004 NHRA season.
"Since Pomona (Calif.)when we ran 4.80 in the first round, we've been fighting a gremlin," Capps said. "Finally, the guys found it. With the rain, it changes your outlook for qualifying. When you're down to two rounds of qualifying, you've got to try and get in the show. We were on the verge of not being qualified and we wanted to go down the track at a decent elapsed time and up came the 4.77. "The Monte Carlo is great. That speed is all the Monte Carlo. The Camaro had a governor on it; it would only go 318 or 319 mph. That same run with the old body would have run 320 mph max. So, we learned a lot right there with the new Monte Carlo body."
Capps will battle No. 14 qualifier Tony Bartone in the first round of Funny Car eliminations, which begin at 11 a.m. (PT) on Sunday.
ESPN2 will televise two hours of qualifying highlights from the Summitracing.com Nationals at 10 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, April 3, and broadcast two hours of final eliminations coverage at 11 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, April 4.
