Jones looking to hit the jackpot in Vegas
LAS VEGAS - Many people flock to Las Vegas in hopes of 'hitting the jackpot' at the slot machines, roulette tables, or any of the other numerous games that casinos in the area offer. NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster driver Paul Jones has another jackpot on his mind, however. The jackpot he and the Western Stabilization Racing team have in mind comes in the form of a 'Wally,' and can only be had by winning this weekend's AC Delco Nationals at "The Strip" at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Jones, from Stockton, Calif., has had a solid year to date in his sophomore season in the Western Stabilization/Redline Oil/Jelly Belly backed Blown Alcohol Dragster. This weekend in Vegas, Jones and team will once again benefit from the tuning expertise of George Santos, father of four time World Champ Rick Santos, who recently clinched a record-breaking fifth championship just two weeks ago. Having the additional talent in his corner, Jones feels the stage is set for the team to pick up their first win.
"We're going to have George Santos back with us on the team for Vegas and the World Finals," said Jones. "We're feeling really confident about these last two races. We're going to shoot for the top. We're going to send this thing down the track, and try to shoot for the No. 1 spot in Vegas. We think we have the data from our previous race in Vegas to know what it is going to take to get it down the track. We're back on the West Coast; we won't have to deal with the humidity anymore that we had to in Dallas and Indy. We're feeling really confident coming into this one."
Not only is the team trying to win their first event, they are trying to gain momentum into the 2002 season, in which they are gearing up to make a run at the World Championship.
"We want to win Vegas," stated Jones. "We want to win every race we go to. Looking ahead into the future a little bit, we are also trying to get some useful data with some of the new stuff we have on the car. It also looks like we are going to stay with the liner tires as well. There are some things we are trying to learn besides just going out there and trying to go fast. We're going to try some different things at the divisional race in between the two, some things off the mainstream to kind of gear up for next season. Next season we are going to go out there and try to win the championship."
Qualifying begins on Friday with two sessions for the Federal Mogul Dragsters. Saturday will feature one final qualifying shot, followed by first round of eliminations. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideFMRacing.com for the latest news from the world of Federal Mogul Racing.
