Whisnant draws on international help for Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- This weekend Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance / Snap-On Tools Chevrolet Cavalier, has a secret weapon which he hopes will improve his chances of qualifying at this weekends 4th annual Summitracing.com Nationals in Las Vegas, Nev.

Whisnant, the sophomore Pro Stock driver form Stockbridge, Ga. has had a less than perfect record at the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. However, this year Whisnant's chances are greatly improved with the addition of Crew Chief Markus Svennson to the RW Performance race team.

Svennson, a native of Hudiksvall, Sweden, brings a wealth of experience from both sides of the pond. Back home in Sweden, Svennson earned a reputation as both an accomplished driver and crew chief. In 1990, Svennson won the Swedish Super Stock Championship as a driver. Then from 1996 to 1998, Svennson served as Crew Chief for Totalmek Racing. It was in 1998 that he wrenched driver Niclas Andersson to the first of four European Pro Stock Championships. Svensson still keeps in touch with Totalmek Racing, and served as a long distance consultant for the team through the 2001 season.

Svennson came to the United States in 1999 to become Crew Chief for Marnell & Black Motorsports. During his tenure with Marnell, Svennson produced a Number 1 qualifier in 2001 in Columbus, and two national events win in 2001 in Memphis and 2002 at the WinterNationals.

Svennson moved to RW Performance in February of this year to serve as Crew Chief.

"We hired Markus on the basis of what he did while he was with Marnell," said Whisnant. "His credentials coming from Marnell's were impeccable, but I honestly did not know about the things he did in Europe until after he came to work with us. Of coarse I assumed he raced over there, but I had no idea he won championships. That was just icing on the cake.

"As far as I am concerned his accomplishments in Europe make him that much more valuable. His experience as a driver gives him a good understanding of how these cars move and handle. That makes to easier for me to talk to him about the car, what is going on during the run. I think that driver to driver communication helps us in getting the most we can out of the car.

"This weekend in Las Vegas, Markus will be a very valuable asset to this RW Performance /Snap-On Tools race team. The Las Vegas area is Markus' home base here in the US. The Marnell's are also based out of this area. So naturally, Markus has a lot of experience here at 'The Strip'. We are going to draw heavily on his familiarity with this racetrack and Las Vegas' unique racing conditions in qualifying, and hopefully racing on Sunday.

"We stated off a little slow this year, but I can feel it all coming together. The team is really starting to mesh, and work well together. A lot of that has to do with the addition of Markus to this RW Performance team. My Dad and I look forward to a long and successful relationship with Markus."

Qualifying at the 4th annual Summitracing.com Nationals in Las Vegas, Nev. will begin on Friday April 4 and continue on Saturday April 5. Eliminations will take place on Sunday April 6 at 11:00 AM PST.
